As early as 2008, Cordylus reported a version of the Carnegie Styracosaurus with crisper paint detail and green, rather than gold, eyes. I'm not sure if this is the original version or a later slight repaint. My current assumption is that all newly released Carnegie dinosaurs had gold eye paint starting in 2001. This would mean the green eye version is a later release. Indeed, the marketing photos show what appears to be a prototype Styracosaurus with gold eyes. However, an alternate possibility is that gold eyes became standard later, and that the 2001-2002 models were updated to have gold eyes. Crisper paint applications, unless this is just an individual sample issue, would also suggest an earlier release.

This unique variant is identical to the typical Styracosaurus Carnegie figures except in one major detail - it uses blue, rather than lavender or purple, paint for the dominant wash color. It also has what appears to be a very light speckling of silvery white paint over the back, giving it a slightly glittery appearance. I have not been able to find any evidence of this variant in catalogs, but the fact that the orange frill patterns, identical to the standard version, appear to be painted on top of the blue wash, it is very unlikely to b a custom piece. My best guess is that this dates to 2005, shortly before the model was retired. If so, the blue Carnegie Styracosaurus may only have had a single production run, or even less. It's possible this figure is the result of changing the paint on existing unpainted stock to finish off a production run rather than mixing more paint specific to a figure which was about to be retired. Perhaps not coincidentally, the blue paint looks extremely similar, if not identical, to the blue wash on the original Carnegie Oviraptor, released the same year Styracosaurus was retired. Or, perhaps more likely, it might have just been a last-ditch effort to boost sales, appealing to young boys by swapping lavender with blue.

(Thanks to collector Ikessauro for bringing this variant to my attention and providing photos).
