This version of the Iguanodon model appears to have simplified paint applications, with a light blue base color lacking the detail-enhancing dark wash of the original release. Instead, it has a lighter, sky blue wash.

Version: 3
Release: c. 1995?
Status: Repaint
Variant type: Multicolor
Material: Light gray vinyl
Paint: Matte. Light blue body. Brown splotches with dark brown spots, light beige spots, white underside, gray claws and beak, pink mouth.
Stamp text: ?
CE mark: ?
TDR rating: 9/10

This rare blue version of Iguanodon is fully painted, so it probably predates the 1996 line refresh. It probably dates to 1995 or so, when several wilder and brighter colored paint variants shortly appeared ahead of the refresh (including the multicolor Triceratops and Pachycephalosaurus). It is also possible that this is some sort of bootleg or repaint, but the mold looks like a normal Carnegie Iguanodon mold, and I've had confirmation from at least one other collector that they own one like this.

Mold 2

Release: c. 1998
Retired: 2016

Version: 1
Release: 1998
Status: Retool
Material: Light gray vinyl
Paint: Matte. 5 colors. Light brown (stripes); cream (spots, nose stripe); black (beak, claws, eyes); blue (wash); white (eye highlights).
Stamp text:  Left-aligned. IGUANODON / 1992 THE CARNEGIE / SAFARI LTD. / CHINA / CE 2
CE mark: Small
TDR rating: 1/10

Like all of the Carnegie models, Iguanodon was reissued in 1997 with light gray colored vinyl serving as the main body color, and other colors painted onto it. Note that the info stamp has been flipped to the opposite side, and the texture where the old stamp was has been replaced. The new info stamp is in all caps, in contrast to earlier versions with "The Carnegie" in lowercase letters.

Version: 2
Release: 2007
Status: Full repaint, retool
Material: Hard gray vinyl
Paint: Matte. 4 colors. Dark brown (stripes); maroon (wash); black (claws, beak, pupils); light brown (eyes).
Stamp text:  IGUANODON / 1992 THE CARNEGIE / SAFARI LTD. / CHINA / CE 2
CE mark: Large
TDR rating: 3/10

Iguanodon was reissued again in 2007 with an all new, mostly brown, color scheme. Interestingly, it appears as though the new color scheme may have been based on the appearance of the Iguanodon in the classic Carnegie Collection poster, which was released before the original Iguanodon model was added to the line.

According to a Safari rep posting on their Facebook page in 2012, the brown Iguanodon was a stronger seller than the earlier gray version.

2007 version (left) vs. 1992 version (right)

Version: 3
Release: c. 2010
Status: Minor retool
Material: Brown vinyl
Paint: Matte. 4 colors. Dark brown (stripes); black (claws, beak, pupils); light brown (eyes).
Stamp text:  IGUANODON / 1992 THE CARNEGIE / SAFARI LTD. / CHINA / CE 2
CE mark: Large
TDR rating: 3/10

Similar to previous repaint versions, but with less paint operations (it seems to replace the maroon wash with a flat brown base color of plastic) and a retooled CE mark.

Comments

  1. Well, here's a weird one: the fully painted light grey , brown striped, white spotted body on my new specimen, with a light grey plastic base under the paint - so far, so good.

But there's a long white stripe down the center of the snout, from tip of nose to the eyes. Unusual.
Also, the belly stamp is odd:
IGUANODON/ 1990 The Carnegie (note the mix of upper and lower case letters)/SAFARI LTD/CHINA
    - left aligned, no CE, and no (c) copyright mark

Your comments on your unknown version seem to imply a cluster of oddball types. Do you think that this is one of them, or ...?

    1. That could definitely be another short-lived experimental paint variant. I feel like I remember seeing specimens with a stripe on the face before... I'll have to look around. This could be another rare prototype-y version ala the white plated Stegosaurus, which seems to essentially have been a neo"catalog"version produced specifically for photo shoots that wound up being included with display stand shipments.

I'm going to tentatively add it at the tail end of the fully painted era, making it version 3.

    2. Hold up - does it actually say 1990 or is that a typo?

    3. Just got an Iguano and mine also has a somewhat white stripe down the nose. Actually not really white, there's a slightly yellow tinge to it, but from a distance I'd say it's white. Mine says " IGUANODON" (large font, upper case) 1992 The Carnegie (lower case) SAFARI LTD. CHINA (upper case, smaller text) No CE mark too.

    4. So, I just realized I had mistakenly used uppercase for "THE CARNEGIE" in the entries for v. 1 and 2. Both are lowercase for that text only. Hopefully this resolves some of the confusion. Version 4 currently does seem to have the white nose stripe, but clearly this feature appeared prior to the stamp change to an all-uppercase "THE CARNEGIE". This may still be version 3?

    5. Aaaand I just went back and checked my samples, including the one I bought from the Safari catalog in 1993. They all have nose stripes! I think you just can't see them at the angle of these photos.

    6. Answer: the 1990 is my typo. Can't believe that I put that in! It should read 1992 The Carnegie for the second line
