The original Carnegie Collection Deinonychus pack can be distinguished from later releases by the softer, more rubbery bodies of the individual dinosaurs as well as the more colorful wash given to both the bodies (which have a golden orange color) and the base (which has a reddish brown, clay color similar to the original Protoceratops nest). The detail on the eyes and mouth is sharper than later releases, which tend to have very sloppy small details. The base has a full info stamp including "Miami, FL" and "Made in China".

Prototype version as it appeared in the 1996 Carnegie Collector's guide. Note the dark brown base, thicker stripes, more detailed sculpt, and sharper paint application on the faces. This was part of the 1989 photoshoot for the 1990 Safari catalog, though as far as I can tell, this "catalog version" was never actually released.

In the 1998 Carnegie Collector's guide booklet. Note the gold wash and more detailed base.

This version has a return to glossier paint, but with less brown wash on the base. The black around the eyes and face is more pronounced, and the whole top of the head is black in some samples. This may be an individual paint variant or another version.

Comments

  1. The v. 2, assuming a dark colored base, has an identical stamp as v. 1

  2. Do you have one that looks like the current v. 2? If so and if it's the same stamp, I think it's more likely that the glossier one is actually the original. I'll have to swap v. 1 and 2.

  3. This is getting interesting. What I considered to be v. 2 originally, probably is the v. 1. First, it has the v.1 stamp; second, the base is much darker than my other two D's; third, it is glossy, not matte. I was mistaken, I don't have the v. 2.

My v. 3's (2 of them) are tricky - a light base, with little brown wash, but with a glossy paint job on the bodies, not matte, and orange backs. This appears to match your second v.3 description. Should these be version 4?
The belly stamp is identical with the first v.3 in your list.
